How to Use Water Wisely

1Make sure that your house is leak-free. Many houses have hidden water leaks. Read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak.

2Repair dripping faucets by replacing washers.

3Check for toilet tank leaks by adding food coloring to the tank. If the toilet is leaking, color will appear in the toilet bowl within 30 minutes. (Flush as soon as the test is done, since food coloring may stain the tank.)

4Operate dishwashers and washing machines only when they are fully loaded. Set the water level for the size of the load you have.

5Report all significant water losses (broken pipes, free-flowing wells, etc.) to the property owner, or local authorities.

More Thao Legends

A

One day, a group of Thao hunters saw a huge white deer. They followed it immediately. Because the deer was very smart and ran very fast, the hunters couldn’t even get close to it. Several hours had passed, and the hunters had climbed one mountain after another and followed the deer along a small river. Finally, as they climbed up a hill, a huge, beautiful lake appeared in front of their eyes. The leader of the hunters decided to tell the people back home about it. Then he moved the whole tribe to live around the lake. This is how the Thao found Sun Moon Lake.

B

Once a Thao girl was going to have a baby, but she was not married yet. She regretted what she had done, but it was too late. Other members of the tribe found out about it and often criticized her. One day, she couldn’t take it any more and left the tribe. She hid herself in the mountains and never went back. Some Thao hunters said that she turned into an owl that came out at night. The bird would cry all night on the roof if a woman in the house was going to have a baby. The Thao believe that the owl cries at night to tell the Thao that a woman in the tribe is going to have a baby and should be treated with respect and care.

C

One day, a Thao mother was working very hard at home, making fishing nets and clothes for the family. She asked her little boy to help her, but he refused. The boy was just too lazy. No matter how many times the mother asked the son to help, he just wouldn’t move a finger. Finally, she got really angry, yelled at the boy, and told him how embarrassing it was for her to have a lazy son like him. The boy was shocked, sad, and angry. He ran off to roof, cut a bamboo scoop into half, and put one piece of it under each arm. Suddenly, he turned into an eagle and soared into the sky. Thao hunters have never killed eagles since then. They believe that eagles were once Thao children and should be kept from harm.
